5 Things You Need To Know Before Getting Your Concealed Carry Permit

Posted on: 14 March 2016

A concealed carry permit allows you to carry a concealed weapon in public places, as long as it isn't a gun-free zone. In this day and age when you hear about shootings everywhere, it's important to be prepared. However, you need to make sure you are prepared to take on such a large responsibility. The stigma about guns is worse than ever, and you don't want your own irresponsible behavior adding insult to injury. Here are some important things you need to know about being a responsible gun owner before you get your concealed carry permit.

Don't Become Reckless

After you get your concealed carry permit, you need to understand how much power it holds. Understand that you need to avoid situations that could potentially escalate into something physical. Having a permit is a big responsibility, and your guns should always be handled with care and respect. Never draw your weapon unless you intend to shoot and only shoot if the situation calls for it. This could include if someone draws their own weapon in a public place or if someone breaks into your home. Never draw your weapon during verbal disputes and avoid drawing it as long as possible during unarmed physical disputes.

Don't Carry if You Won't Use it

Don't carry a weapon just because you can. While the kill rate of concealed carry holders is only 0.004%, you never know if you're going to need to use it. After all, that's the whole point, right? You carry a weapon so you can defend yourself and other innocent bystanders if a criminal on the street starts harming people. However, if you think you're going to cower when the time comes, don't get a permit. You need to be willing and able to use your weapon if it becomes absolutely necessary, but only if it becomes absolutely necessary.

Try Out Different Guns & Holsters

Don't purchase guns and holsters with top reviews without trying them out yourself. A holster that is comfortable for one person might not be comfortable for someone else. for instance, many different types of holsters are often too bulky for a woman's size or clothing. Several hand guns might be too big to be comfortable to use. Try the guns out in your hands at the store and make sure you would be comfortable shooting it. Once you have picked out your gun, try out different holsters that it will fit into.

Practice Around Your Home

Before you carry out in public, practice carrying in the privacy of your home. Wear your holster and practice taking your gun out of it. When you're cooking dinner, pull your gun out and turn around quickly. See how fast you can do it and how easily you can release the gun from your holster. Fumbling with your gun if an emergency situation arises could mean life or death for you or someone else.

Practice Shooting Regularly

Shooting a gun is not like riding a bike. If you don't practice on a regular basis, you're going to get rusty. Find a gun range in your area and make sure you go a few times a year for practice. If you are just learning, consider taking classes and going to the gun range on a weekly basis. If it becomes time to use your weapon and you miss, you will put innocent people in serious danger.

Having a concealed carry permit is your right as an American Citizen, but that doesn't mean you should take it for granted. It's a serious responsibility that comes with serious consequences. Make sure you are 100% comfortable with your weapon so you can protect yourself and others if the time ever presents itself.
